04/06/2011 - 505 Games and Rebellion on Target with Sniper Elite V2
505 Games and Rebellion on Target with Sniper Elite V2
Tactical Shooter Set for Xbox 360 & PS3 Return

Los Angeles, CA – April 6, 2011 –
Publisher 505 Games and developer Rebellion today announced the long-awaited console sequel to third-person tactical WWII shooter with Sniper Elite V2, coming to Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. Sniper Elite V2 will be a modern take on the critically and publically acclaimed classic Sniper Elite for the current generation of consoles – revitalizing a genre all of its own when it is released in 2012. Released in 2005, Sniper Elite saw gamers playing an American OSS secret agent disguised as a German sniper in Berlin during the final days of World War II.

It earned considerable public and critical acclaim with its blend of stealth action - which emphasized patience and cunning over reflexes alone - culminating in being awarded "Best PC/Console Game" at the TIGA awards 2005.

“It’s very exciting to be working with one of the new breed of major publishers like 505 Games,” said Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion. “Sniper Elite was an important, genre-defining property and we’re hoping to have even greater success by teaming up with the talented guys at 505.”

“It’s fantastic for us to be involved in the world of Sniper Elite again,” Chris Kingsley, CTO of Rebellion, added.  “We look forward to winning even more awards with Sniper Elite V2 and wowing the consumers with what will be a great game.”

“We’re very excited to be working with Rebellion on this highly anticipated sequel. Sniper Elite has always been the benchmark of the genre and never been bested....until now,” said Ian Howe, Managing Director of 505 Games. “We guarantee that the sequel will be the most authentic WW2 sniping experience ever – not just in terms of weapon ballistics, but also in delivering the heart-pulsing tension of those do or die moments where one shot really does matter.”

04/05/2011 - All Your Base... New Book Celebrates 50 Years of Gaming
How Fifty Years of Videogames Conquered Pop Culture By HAROLD GOLDBERG

Fifty years since the debut of the first video game, the gaming industry has morphed into a pop-culture juggernaut. With more than $20 billion in American sales and more than 68 percent of the population drawn to the screen, gaming has escaped the glow of the basement television set and exploded worldwide across all manner of media. In an era when the average player is over 35, the face of gaming has changed and Harold Goldberg is the man behind that face.

In ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US: How Fifty Years of Videogames Conquered Pop Culture(Three Rivers Press paperback original; April 5, 2011), Goldberg draws on three years of research and more than 200 interviews to tell the story of gaming’s rise to the top of the pop-culture pyramid. A former editor-in-chief of Sony Online Entertainment and a widely syndicated gaming columnist, Goldberg has made a career out of his favorite pastime and uses his impressive connections to craft the ultimate insider look at the industry.

The book traces the evolution of gaming, from the first video game, Tennis for Two, to the much anticipated future of the industry—with 3D technology and holographic home consoles appearing just around the corner. With interviews from gaming legends such as Sims creator Will Wright and Grand Theft Auto’s Houser brothers, ALL YOUR BASE boasts an impressive lineup of the industry’s heavy hitters but also covers some of the lesser known stories. Highlights include:
  • Access to Sam Houser—the notoriously media-shy executive opens up about his initial struggle to gain a foothold in the gaming world.
  • An in-depth look at the origins of casual gaming. Jason Kapulka, cofounder of PopCap games, reveals how he established the “Mom test” for online games, using his mother’s patience with various platforms as a production litmus test.
  • The ups and downs of Ken Levine and the making of BioShock.
Infusing a comprehensive history of gaming with his own anecdotal commentary, Goldberg explores the genius behind the gaming industry and holds a mirror to modern culture. ALL YOUR BASE celebrates videogames as an art form, one as influential and pervasive as music, movies and television. Exploring gaming as, at once, individual catharsis, social connectivity, and an economic goldmine, Goldberg has written a landmark historiography for a generation—several generations, in fact.
