04/20/2012 - Runscape Announces Mad May Promotion

Friday 20th April 2012, Cambridge, UK – Jagex, makers of RuneScape, the World’s most popular and multi-award winning free-to-play massively multiplayer online adventure game, today announced their plans for Mad May, a month long series of community events, offers and competitions.

Starting today, RuneScape players old and new will be able to benefit from a host of Mad May offers for everyone who remains a member throughout May. These promotions include additional bonus spins for the Squeal of Fortune, the new light-hearted game of chance which was introduced to RuneScape last month, offering players even more chances to win from a wide variety of in-game prizes.

As an additional bonus, all those players who remain a member for the whole of May, will also receive 5,000 Loyalty Points to spend on numerous rewards including a vast array of new costumes, titles of nobility, exclusive emotes and perhaps most exciting of all, an arsenal of gameplay-enhancing auras. What’s more, all eligible players will receive up to a quarter of a million bonus XP on the 1st June.

If the free spins, loyalty points and XP weren’t enough, the RuneScape team will also be hosting Wild Weekends throughout May.  Full details of each Wild Weekend will be posted in advance on the RuneScape website.

04/19/2012 - Dungeon Defenders Map Creation Contest Win $1000
Dungeon Defenders Map Contest - Win $1000!

Trendy Entertainment is proud to announce the first ever Dungeon Defenders mapping contest! Savvy creators are in for a treat, as the winning map will be bought from the designer for $1,000 dollars, and the map will be introduced as an official Dungeon Defenders map with the creator(s) credited for their work. Not only that, but runners-up will get some crazy awesome loot and cash prizes too.

For the complete breakdown of rules, submission process, prizes and further information, click HERE. Otherwise, here’s the quickie breakdown:

The rules are quite simple!

  1. Maps should be traditional Tower Defense, supporting 4-6 Heroes. Use of special mechanics like fans and magic carpets is fine. Boss fights are also allowed.
  2. Use of custom materials is allowed.
  3. Collaborations are allowed. Multiple authors can pool their talents on a single submission, and split any prizes that may be awarded. However, only 1 map per author is allowed.
  4. Maps created prior to the start of this contest are ineligible.
  5. Do your best to make the map actually work. You will not be disqualified if the map contains errors. I.e. a particular monster spawn is broken, last wave doesn’t end properly, whatever. However, you will suffer a small penalty in the scoring process.
  6. Entries must be submitted no later than June 21 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Maps will be judged by a popular and judge vote based on Balance, Originality, Detailing, and Optimization. For a breakdown of these categories, go HERE.

So, what can fearless defenders hope to win?

1st place: Map inclusion into Dungeon Defenders Ranked & Open mode, $1,000 prize and a DunDef prize pack (TBD)
2nd place: $500 and a DunDef prize pack (TBD)
3rd place: $250 and a DunDef prize pack (TBD)

04/18/2012 - Battlefield Heroes Goes to the Moon with New Map
One small step for man, one giant leap for laser-wielding Heroes. Battlefield Heroes™, the hit free-to-play arcade cartoon shooter from EA, is blasting off to the moon this April 18th, 2012 with all-new space themed content. Players can strap on their moonboots and start bouncing around the moon map, ’Lunar Landing’. Using low gravity to traverse the environment and outsmart enemies, gamers can jump over objects and even base jump from a vantage point to take down the enemy faction and lead their team to victory. The ‘Lunar Landing’ map brings a whole new experience to Battlefield Heroes, fundamentally altering the traditional gameplay mechanics of the third-person shooter. To play the all new ‘Lunar Landing’ map, visit www.battlefieldheroes.com and sign up to play for free.

In addition to the new map, Battlefield Heroes fans can now customize their Hero with brand new space explorer outfits, or gear up in full spacesuits before deploying for battle on the moon. Players will also have access to laser-based weapons for the first time in series history, allowing them to swap out their traditional guns and gadgets for high-powered plasma blasters to dish out damage.

Battlefield Heroes is one of EA’s leading free-to-download, free-to-play games.
With over 11 million registered players, the game features monthly content updates and a growing, vibrant community. Boasting zero barriers to entry, now anyone can be a hero on the battlefield.

Battlefield Heroes brings classic Battlefield™ gameplay to a mass audience. The game features fun, cartoon-inspired graphics and gameplay that caters to players of all skill levels. Battlefield Heroes is easy to pick up and play and has robust character customization and online features so gamers can spend hours building up their characters and conquering the world.

04/17/2012 - US Government Wants Access To Your Private Data
US Government Wants Access To Your Private Data

The members of the House of Representatives and various security agencies want to join your video game clan and guild.  That’s the only reason I can think of when it comes to their latest legislative push, The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act.  The legislation would have technology companies sharing your private data with the government.  That’s information like your browsing history, web searches and even gaming habits.

Take a moment to learn more and send a message that they’re overstepping their reach again.

There is a need to update laws to allow for better cyber security, but this legislation is vague and not focused enough.  I mean, how many hours and what maps you play on Call of Duty really matters when it comes to national security?  Not only are the doors wide open as far as what companies can share with the government, the legislation isn’t very specific as to who they’re sharing it with and what it’ll be used for.  Once again Congress is writing legislation about technology they don’t understand.

This is a bit too Orwellian for me; hopefully it is for you too.  Write Congress and let them know to think through what they’re trying to pass.

It’s 28 years too late, but it feels like 1984 now.  Take the 30 seconds and write your Congressman today and help spread the word.
