2013 Arcade Tokens - Limit 1000 Units Each - 2000
After months of stuffing envelopes, checking addresses,
and making trips to the post office, we have completed the 2013 Arcade Token mailing. This year we shipped 505 envelopes to
people across the United States and all around the globe. Here's how everything worked out.
The Gallery Countdown:
This year our giveaway began on June 1st, 2013. This
was the last day of our yearly arcade token countdown. In keeping with tradition our new tokens were revealed in our annual
arcade token image gallery. Every year we create a new art gallery filled with cool and unique arcade tokens from around the
world. The countdown usually lasts 60 days and on the final day the new coin is revealed.
New Exclusive Design Revealed:
In honor of the 4th anniversary of the arcade token
give-away we have created two coins with a brand new design available in both silver and gold. The new collectible
coins feature a brand new, double sided custom design. The front side of the coin features the heroic "Attack Fighter."
On the other side of the coin is the deadly "Pixel Invader!" Each version of the coin was limited to a run of only
1000 units each. Members of our Emerald Token Club actually got to vote to help use choose this design.
The new design features the original
work of artist Christian George-Morehouse, based on the vision of the site founder Elliott S. Thomas. The new coin has been
dubbed the "Space Battle Token."
For the past three years DigThatBox.com
has produced five different arcade tokens all featuring the classic Space Invader icon, known worldwide as the universal symbol
of video games. The mold for the original series has now been retired and classic invader style tokens are out of production.
So if you have any of our “classic invaders” hold on to them because they will never be produced or available
from this site ever again!
The Mailing Begins:
This year, our mailing
began in early October. We started a bit later than usual this year. The summer convention circuit was an extremely busy time
for us. We gave out tokens at the E3 Expo, Anime Expo and the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Tokens were also made
available online during our yearly coverage of the San Diego Comic-Con.
We also moved into a new office building here in Hollywood. The move was excruciatingly
difficult, but with success comes better digs, bigger offices and the formation of our new corporation, DigThatBox INC. That's
right we are now officially a corporation!
So with the fun and excitement
of the summer convention circuit behind us a daunting new task stood before us: we had to sort through over 3000 request emails!
The response to our promotion literally doubled from the previous year. Even we were surprised by the dramatic
rise in requests.The
sorting and address verification process was utterly gruelling. The mailing was handled by only two people working over a
course of months. We hand picked every single token that was mailed to our loyal fans.
Tokens by the Numbers:
The first 500 people to respond
to our promotion received both our new silver and gold arcade tokens in exclusive E3 Expo 2013 packaging. This year, we mailed tokens to 505 people around the world. In total, we have distributed roughly 13,000 arcade tokens worldwide since 2010.
We have created seven different tokens over a period of four years.
Tokens Across the
For the second year in a row we mailed arcade
tokens to every state in the country! From Alabama to Wyoming we sent at least one pair of coins to every state in the US.
Once again we saw a dramatic increase in requests
from all states in the country. California lead the pack with the highest number of replies. New York came in a close second.
Texas and Florida were tied for third followed by Illinois, Oregon, Philadelphia and Washington.
Tokens Around the Globe:
This year we shipped tokens to 35 different countries
around the globe! We shipped tokens to the following nations: Austria, Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile,
China, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand,
Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Sweden, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Trinidad/Tobago
and the United Arab Emirates.
The first person to respond to our token mailing always gets a prize.
We also had several other prizes in honor of our brand new token design.
FIRST ENTRY: Atari Flashback 4: This year Ryan
T. from Romulus, MI was the lucky winner. Ryan won a brand new Atari Flashback 4, along with some batteries for the wireless
controllers and a screwdriver for the battery cover lid. (See, we thought of everything!)
Sega Genesis 80 Games Classic Console: Jose
G. from Hermosillo, Mexico won a brand new Sega Genesis Classic Console with 80 games. Jose informed us
that he's a huge Sega fan, so it made us happy to send him this cool prize.
Ultimate Game Pack: Mary W. from Ontario, Canada won our
ultimate game pack. She got one game for every modern system. That should keep her busy for a while.
N3 Console: Larry M. from Stockton, CA won the Retro N3 Game Console and 3 game pack. We also threw in some
batteries for the wireless controller and a light gun.
Spam Prize: This year our awesome spam prize went to Roberto G. of Modesto, CA. The prize pack included 3
spiral bound Spam notebooks, a pack of spam greeting cards, a deck of spam playing cards and an actual can of Spam! It's pork-a-licious!
The spam prize is just a humorous reminder
that we take your privacy very seriously, and this is the only type of spam you will ever receive from this site.
We would like to thank everyone who helped us promote
this event. Special thanks to our friends at Atari Age.com, Cheap Ass Gamer.com, The E3 Expo, Comic-Con International, Rick
Weis and the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, Tokens Direct, and most importantly everyone who wrote in for a token. We would also
like to thank our friends at the Video Game History Museum.
See You Next Year!!
Arcade tokens are a testament to our love for video
games. This is something that we all share. Tokens are a type of pop culture currency, and these coins are a tiny bit of video
game street art, and our contribution to the gaming world.
We would like to sincerely
thank everyone who contacted us for a token. We love doing the Arcade Token give-away. And it's great to do something just
for the fun of it. We love giving something back to our fans and also to our friends in the global gaming community. Without
your support none of this would be possible. We sincerely thank you all for your interest in this project.
look forward to bringing you more exciting give-aways in the future. Until next year...
