On the first Saturday of May I made my annual trip to Golden Apple Comics for Free Comic Book Day. I made it a point to get there early as last year’s crowd was completely unexpected. Well apparently everyone else had the same idea because the line was circling around to the back of the building! A little treasure map was handed out to those of us in line showing where all the freebies and signings for the day were to be held.

After only 45 minutes, we entered comic nirvana! We were greeted by owner Ryan Liebowitz who thanked us all for our patience and welcomed us inside. Dozens of free comics all stacked neatly before my eyes. I’m not a greedy man so I scooped up my freebies of Star Wars, Judge Dredd and The Walking Dead. As I made my way to the back of the room I was greeted by a Luchadora, or Mexican wrestler, who was giving away free bottles of Jarritos soda. Tasty Mexican soda for me! On the upper level, DJ PDub was back again this year spinning tunes that included superhero cartoon themes as well as soundtracks from comic book movies and TV shows.

Once we exited the back of the building, we were greeted by a large selection of recent comic books, all of which were marked at $1 each. There was also a line quickly forming to get a free sketch and Simpsons comic signed by Scott Shaw.

In the next lot over were the signing tables set up for Max Bemis, Christos Gage and David Horvath. If you’ve ever wondered where all those Uglydolls came from, David Horvath is your answer. Geoff Johns arrived at 1pm to sign the free comic book day special issue of Superman.

Fans enjoyed free ice cream, which was a welcome treat on such a warm day. Thank you All American Softy! There was also a trailer set up with multiple Xbox 360s set to play the newest Star Trek game, as well as free posters for both the game and the movie.

After all of this, it was high time I made my way into the main store itself as there was still one more free comic I wanted, Marvel’s Infinity. Lo and behold it was at the back of the shop as well as a limited supply of a free Iron Man Heroclix figure. I wandered the aisles and picked up a few goodies for myself. It would be so easy to get lost in this store for several hours, just browsing and drooling. Hanging out with fellow comic collectors is not a bad way to spend a spring morning for me!

No Free Comic Book Day can be without a little excitement and today was no exception. A high speed police chase ended with an accident right in front of the shop! The fugitive jumped from his vehicle and tried to make it into the store! Hats off to Ryan for his quick thinking. He blocked the door and kept the person from getting inside. You can read more about it here.

So ends another Free Comic Book Day. Soda, ice cream, games, comics…cops! Many thanks to the awesome staff of Golden Apple Comics. It’s no secret that I love this store. I’ll be back soon enough. See you in the aisles!
