With the Tomb Raider trilogy game package in stores now the most renowned action heroine, Lara Croft, is gearing up for a powerful comeback. No I’m not talking about the Trilogy package that is out for PS3 now - although it’s no doubt nice to re-play Tomb Raider Legend and the Tomb Raider Anniversary edition in HD, mind you!

But this little collector’s item is but to wet or appetites for what is yet to come later this year. A new Tomb Raider game tentatively titled Lara Reborn. As the title suggests Lara has indeed been reborn or redesigned by Crystal Dynamics the team that has already given us the most life-like Lara to date in the smashing success games of TR Legend and TR Underworld.

Many fans have already been asking the obvious question: If Lara was already so life-like why redesign her in the first place? I’ve been wondering the same thing, after all I got a real kick out of the last bunch of Tomb Raider games so is it wise to change a winning formula? In my opinion: Yes! Even the best game loses its kick eventually and requires some fresh blood. A line the design team at CD must have taken quite literal as the initial artwork shows a much more bloodied and worn Lara than we’re used to.

While the story of the game is shrouded in mystery it’s obvious that the gloves have definitely come off. Lara is no longer seemingly indestructible, she’ll get hurt, she will get dirty and bloodied. Probably the reason why tombraider.com now requires age verification!

According to Crystal Dynamics rebooting the franchise was not so much a choice but a necessity. In point of fact it’s more of a re-do of the series offering players a younger, inexperienced Lara that will eventually grow and sustain several physical and emotional trauma in the process. Sounds awesome! We’ll keep you posted once more news hopefully surface at this year’s E3!

I find the “back to the roots” approach especially intriguing considering that GK films has just purchased the rights for a new Tomb Raider movie and plans to reboot the franchise cinematically in 2013! No word yet on prospective casting although fans are eagerly hoping for Megan Fox to portray the adventurous archeologist. Since both the games and the movies will see a reboot I hope they find a hot young girl with a cool attitude that looks a lot like Lara and cast an unknown. After all, when making a Tomb Raider movie you don’t need a star – Lara Croft is your star!
