Take the Waffle-Inator Challenge!

This past weekend I attended the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. While I was expecting a plethora of all things Disney, what I didn’t expect was…flying waffles? Let me explain.

Ever since The Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel, fans have been waiting for Disney to integrate the Marvel characters into the Disney universe. In a most interesting first, the Marvel Heroes consisting of Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and Spiderman will make their grand entrance into the Disney universe in a very animated way. This Friday, August 16 on the Disney Channel (and on Sunday, August 25th on Disney XD) will be the debut of Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel TV special.

In the episode, the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz steals the Marvel Heroes powers and it is up to Phineas and Ferb to team up with them to help defeat Doofenshmirtz and help the heroes regain their powers. I got to see a few minutes of the episode and it was pretty funny. I won’t give spoilers but imagine the heroes you know and love trying to maneuver about when suddenly stricken powerless.

To celebrate this milestone episode, Disney erected a 40-foot tall interactive game for kids of all ages to play. The way it works is like so: Dr. Doofenshmirtz flies around the screen on various evil vehicles while creating havoc for Phineas and Ferb. Fans are asked to man one of four full sized “waffle-inator” canons that shoot full sized foam waffles at the screen. Each time Dr. Doofenshmirtz is hit, Phineas and Ferb move up a level on the giant screen. The goal is to ultimately defeat the evil doctor and rescue Agent P before time expires. Sound simple? Trust me, it wasn’t!

Several members of the voice talent including Adrian Pasdar and Drake Bell were on hand to try to defeat Dr. Doofenshmirtz. After they had their turn, I gave it a go. The canon was large and heavy. Each time Dr. Doof rose higher it became harder to aim. Ultimately I was able to defeat Dr. Doof but I got a workout maneuvering the canon.

I would have loved to play multiple times as this kind of thing brings out the kid in me but I reluctantly moved aside and gave someone else a turn. It was a lot of fun though and when I walked by later on; I stopped for a few minutes to watch kids and teens scream with delight as Dr. Doof cackled with glee.

As an added bonus, Disney provided a full Belgian waffle breakfast (what else!) for the media. Special thanks to Disney for fueling me up for the day.

Tune in this Friday (or the following Sunday) to witness Dr. Doofenshmirtz unleash his most diabolical “-inator” yet!
