Last year was the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. It seemed
that Trek mania was everywhere and Comic Con was no exception. With that in mind, how does one of the most beloved sci-fi
pop culture behemoths top itself as it begins its second half century? How about an all new TV series, for starters?
Unless you've been living in the Delta Quadrant, you should
know by now that the latest Star Trek series, Star Trek: Discovery, premieres on September 24th. This new series takes place
roughly ten years before the original 1960's series. To promote the series at Comic Con, there was naturally the requisite
panel and meet and greet with the cast. What really caught my attention though was the exhibit of props and costumes at the
Michael J Wolf Fine Arts Gallery located just two blocks away from the convention center.
This was a great opportunity to get an early look at
some of the props and costumes of the upcoming show. I really enjoyed the chance to see all of this cool stuff in person.
If you look closely, you can spot some of the inspirations for the outfits from the classic Star Trek franchise. I also
like how the insignia, communicators and the tricorder looked very similar to the ones from old TV series. So while
the designers took some major creative liberties, they also did their best to pay tribute to the history of Trek.
My personal favorite were the Klingon outfits. Mainly because
the Klingons were always such enigmatic villains. The new designs truly live up to the ferocity of the legendary
alien species. I can also say that the Klingon helmet is, simply put, the stuff of nightmares!
Gaslamp Tavern in association with Shmaltz Brewing Company hosted
the debut of Star Trek Symbiosis, the latest micro brew from the Bay Area company. This was created to celebrate the 30th
anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and of course, the episode entitled Symbiosis. I'm not the biggest fan of micro
brews but I gotta tell you, this beer was quite good. Slightly fruity and light, this is something I'm definitely going to
pick up when it becomes available at retail within the next few days. It is a limited time brewing so like myself, you'll
have to stock up!
I'd suggest grabbing a few 4-packs of Symbiosis and have a
viewing party in celebration of the new show. Now I ask you, is that not the best way to kick off year 51 of Star Trek?
Star Trek: Discovery premieres exclusively on CBS All Access on September
