Best Game By Platform: Consoles
Editor's Note: To
be considered for an award a game must have a playable demo, extensive gameplay footage, or a demo that is played by a presenter
during a private demo or an on stage event. Teaser trailers do not qualify.
For many years the folks at dreamGEAR have been making
miniuature desktop arcade games. Their popular "My Arcade" product line has seen many revisions. These portable
arcade machines are usually filled with dozens of 8-bit style video games, reminiscent of what you might have seen on the
NES. The games themselves were usually clones of pre-existing titles, and a great many of them are fun, but
most are nothing to write home about. Now the company has finally scored an exclusive license with Data East. Some of the
most popular games in the Data East catalog will now be made into mini arcade units! This includes such legendary titles as
Bad Dude, Burger Time and Karate Champ. And that's not all the exciting news. The new products will come in two sizes, the
smaller single game versions (shown above) and giant 12" style arcade cabinets. There will even be a larger deluxe model
that includes 30 amazing Data East video games! Best of all the prices are very reasonable, ranging from $30 to $60. You can
expect the entire product line to roll out this fall.
Best Retro Gaming Product:
Hyperkin Retron 77 - HDMI Compatible
Next Gen Atari 2600
Hyperkin shocked the world by unveiling a brand new Atari 2600
console in 2017. The product is dubbed the "Retron 77." The product has many impressive features including HDMI
output, 4x3 and 16x9 modes, and support for all your favorite classic controllers and accessories. I actually spoke with
the developer of this console. He's a new engineer who just joined the company a year ago. He personally convinced the management
to let him make this product. You can tell it's his baby. His passion and enthusiasm for the Atari 2600 gives me great hope
for this device. The Retron 77 is due out this fall with an estimated price tag of just $40.
Best Gaming Hardware:
Microsoft Xbox One X
When Microsoft first launched the original Xbox One console they
stumbled pretty hard out of the gate. The system was underpowered and was unfortunately saddled with an additional product
no one wanted, mainly the Xbox Kinect Camera. Since that time the company has been humbled, and clearly, Microsoft has
learned from their mistakes. They have also been listening to gamers. The Xbox One X is the results of their admirable recovery
efforts. This incredible console is far beyond anything else on the market. The Xbox One X is more than 40% more powerful
than any other console on the market. It's robust graphical power rivals even many high end PCs. It will also play every
game in the Xbox One library, along with an impressive catalog of Xbox 360 titles. Microsoft even promises that original Xbox
titles are coming soon. A great number of Xbox One games will even receive free visual updates, giving them a stunning
new face-lift that's sure to please even the most discerning graphical snobs. As always the system is supported
by the best online gaming network on Earth, Xbox LIVE. It will come with a slightly improved version of the extremely
popular Xbox One controller, a device that has been hailed by many as the best gaming controller on the market. You get all
of this at the very affordable price of $499. That's an amazing deal for a truly outstanding product. The Xbox One X will
launch in North America on November 7th.
Best of Show: Runner Up:
Nintendo had one of the strongest showings at E3. The little
company from Kyoto, Japan took on the industry giants, and quite frankly, in many cases put them to shame. Their latest
flagship title Super Mario Odyssey was the biggest draw at the show. It took home many awards from dozens of media outlets.
It topped the "best of" lists in many different catagories, from best platform game, best action title, best family
game and best of show. However Mario wasn't the only game in town. Nintendo unveiled a host of fan favorites and exciting
new titles. The company had something for everyone. We even saw the return of the popular Metroid franchise in not one, but
two new games. They also promised to support their popular 3DS line well into 2018 and beyond. One thing I have learned from
my decades in the gaming industry, never, ever count out Nintendo. The company is going strong. Their new console the Nintendo
Switch is a massive succcess. Meanwhile the Nintendo 3DS is currently the most popular gaming device on the market. The company
clearly has a very bright future.
Best of Show: Best of E3 2017
Winner of E3 2017: Microsoft
Microsoft kicked off E3 2017 with one of the best presentations
in the history of the company. During their yearly E3 Media Briefing they unveiled one amazing game after another, culminating
with the long awaited reveal of the new Xbox One X console. Microsoft has clearly been paying very close attention to the
gaming community. The Xbox One product line is going strong. Fans now have two options to choose from, with the affordable
Xbox One S at a mere $249, or the super powered, high end Xbox One X, still reasonably priced at $499. However our industry
isn't just about the hardware, it's also about the games, and Microsoft had a ton of them. The company proved they're more
than just Halo and Gears of War. Many new titles joined the ranks this year, including the highly promising Sea of Thieves
and the adorable platforming title Super Lucky's Tale. A popular fan favorite made a return with Crackdown 3. Meanwhile the
highly praised Forza series returned for its most impressive installment to date. The company continues to support cross platform
game compatability between the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, a move of sheer genius that has created the largest gaming eco
system on Earth. Microsoft even partnered with their rival Nintendo for cross platform online game play in the incredibly
popular Minecraft series.
Over all Microsoft showcased more than 40 new titles at the show, 22 of which were platform
exclusive. That's more content than their two biggest rivals combined. They're even planning to bring original Xbox games
to the Xbox One. This is something I personally had wished for several years ago, and now it's becoming a reality.
They're uniting the Xbox brand under one roof. Never before have I seen the company have such an impressive showing at E3.
It's very clear that Xbox One will be the best place to play, now, and for many years in the future. With an incredible
roster of games, the best online gaming network and three generations of Xbox titles under one roof, Microsoft has positioned
the Xbox One as the best value in gaming. They have clearly won E3 2017 hands down.
