A World of Wonderful Entertainment!

Written By: Abel Pinedo

WonderCon returns to Anaheim in 2013! For the second year in a row, I’ll be amongst the huddled masses to give you my eyewitness report on all things awesome. WonderCon runs from March 29th to March 31st. Let’s take a look at some of the potential highlights of this year’s show.

Keep in mind that WonderCon has a much greater emphasis on comic books and the creators than its big brother San Diego Comic Con. This is great news for all fans of pulp fiction, but there is also quite a diverse amount of events and panels for everyone to enjoy.

The fun kicks off on Friday as convention mainstay Richard Hatch presents a panel celebrating the 35th anniversary of the original Battlestar Galactica. Keep your eyes peeled for potential surprise guests! Felicia Day will be on hand to present the latest news from Geek & Sundry. Friday is also the big day if you’re a fan of Warner Brothers television. A huge three hour panel dedicated to the shows Revolution, Arrow, The Following and Teen Titans Go will present previously unaired footage.

Several panels all weekend will be dedicated to the creation and marketing/distribution of indie comics. Many high profile creators and artists will be on hand to discuss and share stories. If you need info and tips on how to self publish, this is the place to be. The experts will be on hand to help you launch your career in comics!

Producer/Director Eli Roth will be on hand, along with several members of the cast of his latest venture, a panel dedicated to the Netflix exclusive series Hemlock Grove. Friday night is also the world premiere of the latest DC animated movie, Superman: Unbound, as well as the newest episode of the BBC fan fave Dr. Who.

Saturday continues the awesomeness. If you’re a fan of the History Channel’s new series Vikings, then you won’t want to miss the chance to partake in a Q & A with members of the cast. For something different, there will be a panel dedicated to horror film music composers. You just might learn something about the music that makes you jump out of your skin. Directors Guillermo del Toro and James Wan will be on hand to present the most recent footage from their upcoming films, Pacific Rim and The Conjuring.

If you’re a fan of the cult hit series Falling Skies, then you won’t want to miss a sneak peak at never before seen footage of the upcoming third season. Sony Pictures presents a ninety minute panel on three upcoming anticipated features. Keep your eyes peeled for the cast and creators from Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, This is the End and Evil Dead. Of course this means only one thing: Bruce Campbell in the house!

If you’re a fan of ElfQuest, then you won’t want to miss a special panel celebrating the 35th anniversary of the comic. Fans of Stephen King won’t want to miss a special sneak peak at the upcoming series Under the Dome. Join selected cast and producers as they present a first look at footage of this televised adaptation. Not to be outdone, NBC presents a screening of the first two episodes of their upcoming series, Hannibal, based on the character created by Thomas Harris. And Saturday ends with the 9th Annual WonderCon Masquerade.

Sunday begins with a panel featuring a look at Joss Whedon’s upcoming feature take on Shakespeare’s classic Much Ado About Nothing. Panel guests are being kept a secret at this time. The fun and mystery continues as Chris Hardwick brings some surprise guests to discuss all things Nerdist. He promises some special announcements.

For the second year in a row, staff members of TheOneRing.net will be discussing the upcoming feature in the Hobbit franchise. Star Wars fans won’t want to miss out on a panel discussion of the newest comic book series about the galaxy far far away. Another returning favorite is the Starship Smackdown but this time it’s not about spaceships but rather alien species. Tune in for a lively discussion featuring some unannounced surprise guests. For Whedonites, the fun continues into the afternoon as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog closes out the day. Audience participation highly recommended.

Seeing as how WonderCon is devoted more to comic books, I would make it a point to check out as many comic panels as possible. You just might find yourself drawn to an old favorite or discovering a new series. And don’t forget all the great indie comics!

One last thing, WonderCon is a great place to do a little shopping. Here are just a few of the awesome exclusives offered this year.

WonderCon Anaheim / Comic-Con International (booth #1001) will have an exclusive book devoted to the 40 year history of Comic-Con. This beautiful 208 page hardcore book features a wrap around cover designed by comic legend Sergio Aragonés.

Dark Horse Comics (booth #819) will have an exclusive variant cover for Star Wars: Legacy Vol. II

DC Entertainment (items sold at Graphitti Designs booth #1001) will be selling a 2 pack of 3.75” actions figures of Guy Gardner & Larfleeze as well as variant covers for Batman #17 and Justice League of America #1

When all is said and done, I’ll be back here to give you my firsthand account of what I saw and experienced: the good, the bad and the Wonderful.
