Saturday is typically the busiest and most exciting day
of any convention. Aside from all the fun stuff happening at the convention center, there are alway some great off site events
to draw fans after the close of the show floor. Saturday night I made my way to Tom's Urban, just a quick walk from the LA
Convention Center, to attend an exclusive party celebrating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. To gain access to this
awesome event one had to acquire a special wristband. With the promise of free food, drinks and entertainment, how could I
Right off the bat, I have to give props to the good people
at Nickelodeon. This event was very well organized. We were told to line up outside the venue and the party would run
from 7:30 to at least 9pm. So I've got my wristband ready and by 7:35pm I was inside the doors. As I walked into the event
I could instantly hear some cool tunes being played by a DJ. Just moments later I was greeted by the Turtles
themselves and presented with a surprise goodie bag to boot! I love unexpected surprises and this bag was awesome. It was
full of incredible loot! I got a DVD, a notebook, a Funko pop of Shredder and a few other trinkets that will be put to
good use. Now on to the festivities.
The Turtles were dancing up a storm and posing for pictures
with fans of all ages. The staff was winding their way through the group with trays of free slices of delicious pizza (no
surprise there), sliders, french fries and festively decorated cupcakes. Again, kudos to the staff for being on top of their
game. Over on the very far corner were two giant cut-outs for photo-ops and the wall was decorated with original Ninja Turtles
artwork of all kinds.
Another area had a selection of clothing decorated with various
TMNT logos and artwork that was soon to be available at retail stores. We were also treated to a demo of the latest
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Portal Power app. My personal favorite was the wall that featured selected toys from the very
beginning of the franchise, to new toys that haven't been released yet. Some of you know I'm a sucker
for nostalgia so to see some vintage toys in pristine packaging from the earliest days of the Ninja Turtles phenomena was
a real treat.
The fun didn't let up as the DJ would occasionally stop the
music to ask trivia questions with prizes being awarded. The highlight was the kid who was sporting a shell-tastic homemade
Turtle costume based on the original cartoon who was obviously worthy of the grand prize. Totally awesome dude!
There were TV monitors scattered about that were playing interviews
with some of the creative team behind the Turtles. It was cool to watch as they kept showing sketches of concept artwork
versus finished product. If you had a keen eye, you could even spot some of the voice talent wandering through the crowd and
taking in all the fun. You know, even villains have to cut loose once in a while. Sure enough, Rocksteady and Bebop soon joined
in the fun and danced the night away. No fighting, just fun.
As the evening wound down, stomach full, thirst quenched, body
exhausted, all I can say is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sure know how to party! Thanks again to our shell-rific hosts at
Nickelodeon for providing some much needed refreshments and entertainment.
